DescriptionThe American Diabetes Association is seeking a Public Relations student for help in getting the word out to the media about diabetes, local events and programs. This could be done through pitching feature stories, paid ads, calendar listings, social media postings and more.
We are looking for exposure in print, television, radio and social media.
Events/Programs could include:
• Alert Day
• Tour de Cure
• Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes
• Get Fit Don’t Sit
• Healthy Lunch Day
• American Diabetes Month
• Announcements of new sponsors
• Announcements of new board members
• Feria de Salud
• Camp Wana Kura
• And more.
There are about 10 staff who work in the office. It’s a professional office with traditional individual office space. The staff is very collaborative and friendly. The intern will worked in a shared office that might have as many as two people in there at once.
About the ADA:
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is dedicated to its mission to “prevent and cure diabetes and improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes”. Every 17 seconds someone is diagnosed with diabetes, a disease that kills more Americans each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined. Nearly 29 million children and adults in the United States live with diabetes and an additional 86 million have prediabetes, placing them at an increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes and its complications (CDC, 2011 data). Unless we take action, current estimates project that as many as one in three adult Americans will have diabetes by 2050.
In 2011, the organization adopted a four-year Strategic Plan (2012-2015) with an organizational focus of improving outcomes for people with diabetes and prediabetes. Three plan includes three specific focuses: 1) Launching outcomes-based community programs targeted to high risk populations by further developing strategies to measure and enhance program effectiveness; 2) cultivating strong, sustainable relationships with key organizations at the national and community level to expand the Association’s reach, influence and impact among disparately affected populations; and 3) generating significant funding to support local and national mission activities through an aggressive, nationally coordinated strategy to secure grant funding.
Mission-critical work of the ADA includes community programs, diabetes research, advocacy, professional programs, and public awareness.
ResponsibilitiesPosition will be responsible for updating media contact lists. Pitching stories to local media, updating calendar listings and helping to gain publicity for the initiatives as directed.Might have to coordinate speakers for interviews.
RequirementsWe are looking for a self-starter who works well with others as well as independently. Creativity, personal skills and ability to multi-task are a must. We prefer candidates who are currently enrolled in a program where coursework is applicable to the internship.
