Las Vegas is one of the fastest-growing and most explosive cities in job growth. Known for gambling, entertainment and extravagant theme hotels, Sin City and its population of 600,000 or so play host to nearly 40 million visitors a year. Underneath all that glitz, however, serious professionals are finding their career niches, and women in particular are taking center stage, making up nearly 65 percent of its high-tech work force.

As a city of leisure, the Entertainment Capital of the World centers on hospitality, offering resorts, casinos, shows and epicurean delights. It also has conservatories and botanical gardens, raceways, the Mob Museum, the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay, Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, shooting ranges and the Pinball Hall of Fame. For those searching for something larger in scale, it also has Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and the Hoover Dam Bypass.

Sin City is not all play. Las Vegas is a Foreign Trade Zone with a global trade program. McCarran International Airport is here, warehousing and shipping cargo worldwide. The largest single employer in the city is the Clark County School District, with a string of major hotels, resorts and casinos following. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police and University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) round out the top 10. Zappos is headquartered here, and its CEO Tony Hsieh and his team at CatalystCreativ are investing $350 million in rewickering downtown through a combination of real estate and residential development, small business and tech startups, and education.
