Gateway to the South, Louisville is a charmingly dual mix of historic architectural beauty and cutting-edge industry specializing in health care and medical science, as well as manufacturing and transportation and logistical technologies. It’s also gained attention for being affordable, livable and a great place for young entrepreneurs. With a population a bit over 600,000, it ranks 28th in size.
The City of Beautiful Churches has well over a dozen stunning houses of worship in addition to a whole host of other structurally distinct buildings in Old Louisville. The East Market District – nicknamed NuLu for New Louisville – is a trendy shopping and food mecca brimming with gourmet restaurants and craft beverages. Thanks to the presence of the Ohio River, Louisville also has the Belle of Louisville steamboat, the Big Four Bridge and access to the Falls of the Ohio State Park on the other side. The city has never been able to keep a professional sports team, but the University of Louisiana’s Cardinals basketball and football teams are local favorites.
Louisville’s number-one employer is the United Parcel Service (UPS) Worldport, part of Louisville International Airport. Worldport is UPS’s 24-hour fully automated air hub that processes 1.6 million packages for global distribution every day. The health insurance provider Humana is Louisville’s second-largest employer, bringing home the importance of the medical field. Four more of the city’s 10 largest employers provide some form of medical care, and more than a dozen biotechnology companies are located here. In fifth and sixth place, respectively, Ford Motor Company operates its Kentucky Truck Plant here, and General Electric sited its Appliance Park here.
