Description

Independence Media is the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization behind MiND TV in Philadelphia, among the largest independently owned and operated non-commercial broadcast television stations in the United States. Independence Media is launching an ambitious new initiative: a digital-first, interactive media project designed to entertain, inform, educate and spark conversation around the biggest, most vital questions 21st century adults must consider as we shape a sustainable society for ourselves and future generations.

We are developing narrative and interactive programs featuring musicians and authors, specialists and scholars, puppets and performers; a mass-participation game; and a curriculum for 21st century global citizens. We’re experimenting with every available traditional and emerging media technology as we aim to create a new format that incorporates stories, facts, music and large-scale participation as a unified online experience. Our perspective is local and global, without hidden agendas. We are combining serious intent, a wealth of deeply researched resource material, and unfettered imagination to create media with tangible social impact. And yes, we are doing this with puppets.

Internship and volunteer positions are open for Undergraduate and Graduate Students interested in the intersection of technology, media and social good. These people believe, as we do, that entertainment media can be a force for social change. This is an opportunity to engage in deep market analysis, synthesize data across a myriad of market sectors, and contribute to the unified visualization of the Entertainment Media for Social Impact ecosystem.

Responsibilities

Areas of focus for research are detailed below. In each of these four topics, it is the responsibility of the candidate to report back on the following:

Corporate Responsibility: Which local and national corporations have woven commitment to social change into their corporate DNA? This is an opportunity to research emerging Corporate Philanthropy platforms such as Tech for Good (tech companies donating funds from their corporate foundation or matching employee donations) and Pledge 1% (companies donating 1% of stock as part of their social responsibility commitment), as well as mission-aligned corporate foundation programs.

Institutional Funders: Which local and national grant-giving institutions have 2015 – 2016 mandates that are aligned with our mission? This is an opportunity to research and identify potential grant opportunities across Arts, Humanities, Digital/Interactive, Social Change, Education and Media.

Next Generation Philanthropists: Who is disrupting philanthropy today? What individuals are taking their commitment to social good to the next level? How are these individuals identifying, financing and engaging with the mission-aligned causes they are championing? This is an opportunity for targeted research and engagement across individual giving, B-Corps, and emerging philanthropic platforms to identify mission-aligned opportunities for this project.

Participant Analysis: Who are our affinity audiences? What are their habits, passions, aspirations? How, where and when do they inform and educate themselves? How, where and when to they engage with the media entertainment of choice? Ours is not a passive audience: this is an opportunity to decode demographic and psychographic data, develop audience-participant personas, and provide behavioral insights for primary, secondary and tertiary market targets. {Market Researcher, Social Sciences, Liberal Arts, metrics, analysis, data visualization} {2 positions available}
