The American Library Association (ALA) is the oldest and largest library association in the world. Founded in 1876, our mission is to share our vision of the importance of libraries, literacy and free access to information. ALA offers professional services and publications to members and nonmembers, including online news stories from American Libraries and analysis of crucial issues from our Washington Office. Our main office is located in the heart of Chicago’s Gold Coast, right off of Michigan Ave, with satellite offices in Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Washington, DC.

The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) is one of eleven divisions in the Chicago office.


Marketing intern will assist ALSC staff in putting together monthly email blasts using subscription-based email server. Plan, design, edit, and proof-read email blasts to be delivered to membership of over 4K individuals. Maintain and develop database of segmented contacts; use values to segment contacts based on membership status, geographical location, employment status, etc.

Assist in planning and implementing direct mail campaigns; integrate digital and print campaigns to effective market programs and services. Strategize social media campaigns (Facebook, Twitter) which seek to engage and incentivize membership and membership benefits; plan and respond to social media posts. Work with staff to identify key areas of member benefit messaging including professional development, awards/grants, and conferences/events. Investigate new communication channels for members; determine feasibility and sustainability of emerging social media channels including Pinterest, Tumblr, etc.

Assist in organizational customer service needs to effectively communicate resources and opportunities.


Introductory knowledge of HTML, XML, and CSS. Significant previous Microsoft Excel, Word. Notepad C++ experience is desirable. Previous experience with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator. Knowledge of web-based photo editing software and proper.

Interest in non-profit membership development and engagement. Introductory knowledge of project management skills including working to deadlines, soliciting feedback from staff members, working with committees. Strong customer service skills and the ability to build rapport with key decision makers. Demonstrates a high level of initiative.

Familiarity with library services, youth librarianship, and publishing for young people is a bonus.
