DescriptionThe communications intern will gain experience in the areas of media relations, community outreach, social media, publications, and web communications, and learn about the workings of the institution as a whole, interacting with staff and the public at every level. The intern will be part of a department that includes visitor services, membership, education, and public programs.
This is an ideal opportunity for a student studying communications, marketing, journalism, or a related field. The intern will help publicize upcoming exhibitions, public programs, and educational initiatives.
ResponsibilitiesDuties will include:
Fact-checking and distributing press materials, including media advisories, fact sheets, and event listings
Participating in staff planning meetings to help determine communications objectives and advertising/marketing/promotional campaigns
Helping to execute grassroots outreach to schools, cultural institutions, community organizations, online communities, and other local and national audiences in order to stimulate attendance and diversify audiences at Autry exhibitions and programs
Proofing and fact-checking Autry publications, such as bimonthly calendars, direct mail postcards, and informational brochures
Researching, maintaining, and updating press clippings and press and community outreach lists
Assisting with visitor services and visitor evaluation efforts
The intern will be trained and mentored by Maren Dougherty, Director of Communications and Marketing. The intern will be given ample time to tour the permanent and temporary exhibitions in order to understand their content and fully orient him/her to the fast-paced nature of arts marketing and communications. While the focus of the intern's work will be in the promotion of the current and upcoming exhibitions, he/she will be trained and encouraged to participate in the team's busy, day-to-day activities in support of all of the Autry’s exhibitions and programming.
