Description

The Dominguez Adobe Museum (DRAM) is a small history museum sitting on a historical site. The Adobe Museum, the Museum’s office and Carriage House will be the intern’s workspace areas, and within these areas, the intern will be exposed to and asked to perform various duties, participate in different activities, and be responsible for:
• completing 3 specific projects,
• participating in a series of classes (which address specific topics relevant to a curator’s responsibilities in a small museum),
• conducting basic conservation of different artifacts,
• doing research and exhibit preparation, and
• participating in museum operations activities (to get an overview of how everything works).

The equipment the intern will use includes computers, copying, scanning, and fax machines; data loggers

The Museum is dedicated to the Dominguez's family legacy and heritage. A legacy which began in 1784.

Responsibilities

Days and hours of internships are Tuesday through Friday from 8a.m. to 4p.m. and two Saturdays from 11a.m. to 2p.m. Lunch will be from 11:30a.m. to 12p.m. Within 8 hour days the intern will have two 10 minute breaks.

Nature of training is to 1) increase the intern's understanding of preservation principles and techniques; 2) provide information on a) agents of deterioration, b) risk management, c) object handling and transport, d) object labeling, e) exhibit lighting, f) security, g) emergency preparedness, h) materials for storage and display, I) storage and exhibit philosophies, and h) condition assessments.

Intern responsibilities are 1) to grasp the concepts, principles, and techniques of lecture and 2) use appropriate agents in mocked maintenance situation. All activities are to be completed by week’s end by 4p.m.

Research: Nature of the training is to broaden intern’s perspective of historical research and help prepare for projects’ assignment.

Intern responsibilities are 1) to grasp the concepts relevant to library and electronic research; 2) complete research exercises All activities/exercises are to be complete by week's end by 4p.m. on
day 3.

Cataloging: Nature of training gives insight on how to document and organize the objects and artifacts in the museum.

Intern's responsibilities are 1) to assist with correctly categorizing, assigning the correct numbers and classification to objects; 2) to work with database and properly label objects throughout the museum. All activities and quiz is to be completed the 4th day of the week.

Basic Conservation: Nature of training is to relate why cleaning is important and how to prevent damage when cleaning.
Intern's responsibilities are 1) to grasp the specific techniques that that minimize damage while getting the work done; 2) create a housekeeping manual; 3) understand when to call in a specialist, such as a conservator when needed; 4) take a quiz; and create a housekeeping plan due by the 4th day of Week Five by 4p.m. Submit Project One findings.

Cataloging II: Nature of training is to relate why cleaning is important and how to prevent damage when cleaning.

Public Relation & Educational: Nature of training gives insight to the PR process from a curator's position.

Intern's responsibilities are 1) to communicate via phone/internet with two print and broadcast outlets to relate a Museum’s community event; 2) assists in organizing the forth coming public programs/events on the Museum’s ground and the Museum's Carriage House. Activity 1 is to be completed the 2nd day of Week Seven.
