Description

The New London County Historical Society is a regional archive with a house museum. Our holdings include documents, manuscripts, photographs, and artifacts which pertain to the history of Southeastern Connecticut. The scope of our collection ranges from the colonial period, through the revolution and whaling, and into the 20th century.

Our recent strategic planning and MAP review, have launched an initiative to better organize our collections and provide finding aids with good metadata. Interns will be given collections to inventory and organize. The collections will be curated for content and scope notes. This is hands on true archival work, under the supervision of museum professionals. The goal will be a proper inventory, scope, and content notes which will be placed on line as finding aids for researchers.

Responsibilities

Interns are responsible for maintaining their hours, managing their collection, and providing the complete materials at the end of the internship. All work needs to be done at Shaw Mansion. Interns will also be responsible for learning the house tour and being available for those tours should their schedule coincide with our open times.

Requirements

Interns must present themselves professionally, be able to work independently and ask for direction as required. Students who are looking for library degrees, museum studies, history, and archival degrees are welcome to apply. Computer literacy is needed, a working understanding of wordpress and microsoft office applications desirable but not necessary. Personal computers or note books a plus.
