Description

The New London County Historical Society was founded in 1870. It is the oldest historical organization in eastern Connecticut and one of the oldest in the country. The Shaw Mansion, built by Captain Nathaniel Shaw in 1756, is the society headquarters. Shaw Mansion was used as the war office for Connecticut’s navy during the Revolution, and sold to the NLCHS by the family in 1907, making it an early example of historic preservation.

Curatorial and Archive Interns will assist in new exhibit design, curating various collections, and reorganizing the museum collections. Under the direction of the collections committee, interns will assist the society in updating their collection procedures. Interns will have hands on experience in working with documents and artifacts leave their position with valuable resume worthy experience.

Responsibilities

Interns will select a project from the numerous projects available. This could include curation of a specific collection, organizing historic documents, digitizing selected pieces of the collection, exhibit planning and design, and artifact or room restoration.

Requirements

Computer literacy a must. Experience with Past Perfect desirable, but not required. History, Public History, and Library Science Majors encouraged to apply. Interested students should send a cover letter and resume to info@newlondonhistory.org
