Museum collections/history intern

Description

The Virginia Museum of Transportation is looking for an intern who is interested in learning the many aspects of museum work. At a small museum, staff and volunteers wear many hats, and we are looking for someone who would be interested in helping with cataloging, research, grant writing, and label copy writing, just to name a few possible duties. This is an UNPAID internship, but the "from the ground up" experience will be invaluable, and there is the possibility of other cross training in the rest of the museum's operations. We all chip in where needed around here, so you could get a pretty well rounded museum experience. The ideal candidate would be studying or have completed coursework in public history, museum studies, or historic preservation. Graduate students preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

1. Photographing, data entry, tagging of historic resources
2. Writing label copy for artifacts on display
3. Organizing collections rooms
4. Research
5. Occasional special event staffing

Requirements

Knowledge of PastPerfect software is ideal, but not required. Course study in public history, museum work, historic preservation, or similar preferred. Basic understanding of appropriate handling and care of historic resources required.
