The Museum of the American Gangster presents the history of organized crime through an exhibition and a historic site in a former speakeasy. Museum collections include images, weapons, a bootlegger safe and evidence from crime scenes.

The museum assistant helps the curator and guides to anchor the museum, answer phone, greet visitors, collect admissions, help in cataloging, learn to do tours, maintain exhibitions, update labels and help with museum events. The Museum is open 7 days a week from 1 to 6 at 78 St. Marks Place, New York, NY 10003.


Day to day duties include covering welcome desk at Museum, collecting admissions, tending to collections on display, updating social media posts, and after some time conducting tours of the museum and historic site. Other work will be to contribute to updating an online catalog which is in progress, possibly taking photographs of some museum exhibits and doing research online.


Skills needed include computer literacy, interest in history and material culture, comfortable working with the public, fast learner, ambition to learn museum practices and familiarity with social media
