Description

We provide No-Fee After-school Steel Band programs in under-served neighborhoods. MPAC also specializes in paid Adult Steel Band classes, On-site World Music Presentations and a variety of customizable workshops, lectures and demonstrations featuring Percussion instruments from around the world.

An established community arts provider in Hampton Roads is looking for an intern to join our team and learn the ropes of facilitating youth and adult steel band classes in various community settings. The intern accepted for this position should expect to be involved in all aspects of program/class management.

The benefits to the intern are exciting and important. They include working with an expert in several areas of World Percussion who is a proven program facilitator and cares deeply about producing quality work, learning the ins and outs of steelpan program facilitation and helping to teach classes and manage ensemble performances. In return the intern should bring essential skills to this position: strong percussion skills, excellent communication skills, the ability to work independently, prompt professionalism and most importantly, the ability to lead and patiently demonstrate to class participants.

Responsibilities

• Instrument set-up/break-down for classes
• Learn all music for specific classes
• Assist with class instruction and instruct independently at times
• Assist with all aspects of performances
• Assist with social media for after-school programs

Requirements

Must be college sophomore or higher. Excellent rhythmic skills are a must, with experience on drum set. Good computer skills are needed, with experience working on the Web and in social media. Excellent written and oral communication skills and organizational skills are important. The ability to work independently with minimal supervision. A strong interest in entering a position in the percussive arts is vital. Must be available for Fall and Spring Semesters 2013-2014.
