Description

The Harris Conservatory of Music is on a mission. Corporate America has invaded the private lesson industry, and corporate-style hacking of employee wages is undermining the state of the musical art!

Music "Academies" and "Schools of Rock" that keep popping up are usually franchises that are charging a premium price for lessons, but paying their teachers sub standard wages. The result? The best teachers are insulted by these pay hacks, and leave the industry to work in other professions. These experienced, professional musicians are replaced by college kids, hobbyists, or little old ladies who are willing to work for sub standard wages. So the torch is passed to the next generation by the least qualified musicians. And over time, this lowers the state of The Musical Art.

We offer lessons by professional working musicians who are also experienced teachers, the finest instrument repair, and essential accessories. We pay our teacher better then any other teaching facility in SE Michigan, so we get, support, and keep the very best teachers. We also sponsor free concerts and student recitals for the community throughout the year.

Our mission is to Conserve the State of the Musical Art through the work we do, and the services we offer. We are quickly becoming a hub for musical activity in the area.

We are looking for an intern to learn about advertising for events, organizing student and teacher concerts, working with venues, stage management issues, promo, and follow-up. We also need this person to learn about the inner workings of a small independent business; to spend time working behind the counter.

Responsibilities

Organizing student and teacher concerts, including: Finding and securing venues, promoting the events to local media (including social media), creating a "buzz" about upcoming activities, and networking with other local business partners.

Maintaining our social media updates.

Working at The Conservatory, handling students and transactions.

Must be present at all Conservatory concerts and special events.

Requirements

Must have a strong passion for music, and the desire to see the State of the Musical Industry stay strong! Must be organized, open minded, and posses good people skills. Must be able to be self motivated, and to be counted on to perform tasks - especially promo - in a timely manner.

Experience with the Square app is helpful but not required. Experience with twitter and instagram also a bonus.

We would ideally like to find someone who plays an instrument and/or sings, but non-musical candidates are welcome.

Needs to be able to work with Open Office word processor documents. Experience designing flyers & promo materials a bonus.

Skills

Preferred - Strong Communication Skills, Musical Background
