Description

The mission of Best Friends Animal Society is to end the killing in America's animal shelters and create a time when there are No More Homeless Pets. We do this by building community programs and partnerships all across the nation. We believe that by working together we can Save Them All.

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is the largest animal sanctuary for companion animals in the nation. Located in Kanab, Utah, it is the home for around 1,600 animals at any given time including dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, and pigs.

Best Friends Animal Society offers a 4-month internship program that is designed to provide participants a comprehensive, hands-on experience with a designated species (presently offered in dogs, cats, and parrots). There are specific learning objectives and a syllabus outlining tasks and competencies for each of the animal areas. Interns will be involved in all aspects of the day to day activities and overall operations of their animal area. The internship program is open to individuals, ages 20 and over, who are interested in gaining knowledge and experience in the field of animal care and welfare. Internship dates and an application can be found here: http://bestfriends.org/sanctuary/volunteer/internships.

Responsibilities

The majority of your internship will be animal care. This can be physically challenging and may include feeding; lifting heavy bags; cleaning kennels, catteries, bird cages, and horse stalls; and exercising the animals. Socializing is also an important activity at the sanctuary. As an intern, you will learn how to gently train and socialize these animals, which increases their chance for adoption. You will also attend classes, discussions, presentations and meetings.

Requirements

This program is open to individuals ages 20 and over. You will need to provide your own transportation during your stay. Internships are unpaid; however, we do have scholarships and stipends interns can apply for to assist with housing and travel.
