Position Description?- Commercial Fisheries Internship
Gulf Wild is searching for one person to fill a unpaid internship to continue to grow the MyGulfWild.com community and provide them with on the dock data gathering and fish handling experience. Position will be located in Grand Isle, LA. The position is a part-time position (approximately 30 hours/week) for a duration of 6 months (with possible renewal based on availability and performance). The intern will report to the Sustainability Director and the Outreach Director once a week via Skype to map out the objectives for the week and month ahead.






Gulf Wild is a non-profit brand of conservation that invests in their employees and interns by insuring they are achieving their career goals in Fishery and Seafood Sustainability. Each intern will receive full access to the Ocean Conservation Careers online course and ongoing training membership program to ensure they have the tools and skills they require to fulfill their career objectives while working at Gulf Wild or if they work somewhere else in the future.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities will include:?-
Working directly with commercial fishermen at official Gulf Wild fish houses and offloading facilities, the intern will work to implement the Gulf Wild system. The intern will tag the Gulf Wild fish as offloaded and input catch data into the TransparenSea database system. Data will also be collected through otolith collection and archiving, weight, length and photos of fish for database. Some additional responsibilities include ice loading of commercial fishing vessels, tracking of Gulf Wild inventory, categorizing and packing fish. The intern will engage with fishermen throughout the entire offloading process to better ensure accuracy of tag integration and data capture. Engaging community members during offload to educate the public on commercial fisheries, seafood responsibility, fisheries conservation and Gulf Wild.

Requirements

Basic Qualifications:?- Must have a background in Marine Biology, Biology, Ecology, Oceanography, Marine Conservation, Education, Conservation, or Environmental Science;?- Experience with communicating to the public of all ages;?- Must be motivated with the ability to work independently; and,?- Must have access to a regular Internet connection as the position in virtual and the work is mainly conducted online.

Preferred Qualifications:?- Must be flexible. Commercial fishing offloads are weather dependent and the intern will need to be “on call” for offloads.
