Urban Peak helps youth experiencing homelessness and youth at risk of being homeless by providing essential services and a supportive community, empowering them to become self-sufficient adults. Urban Peak is seeking an intern in Life Skills - Client Services at our Drop-In Center called the SPOT . The Spot has a community area for youth, medical clinic, commercial kitchen and dining area, showers, laundry facilities, and staff offices to use for intake and intervention services. This position will be supervised by the SPOT Supervisor, Clayton Gonzales. The Spot has a paid staff of 3-4 and usually 1-3 volunteers serving at any time period. This is a great opportunity to learn about the homeless youth population and the skills and policies needed in providing basic and sustainable resources.
Volunteers will be crossed trained to serve in registering clients and providing breakfast, showers, laundry, clothing, hygiene items and access to Urban Peak counseling, education, and job training programs. The registration tasks will include answering questions of clients about Urban Peak programs and activities, specifically related to The Spot. This person will admit and check clients in for activities, meals, meetings with staff or to use the laundry and shower facilities. The duties also include attending staff meetings for planning and evaluation of programs.
Must be at least 21 years of age. Volunteers must be willing to serve and interact with an urban youth population and need minimum supervision. Understand that some youth you’ll meet literally live on the streets and may have concerns such as substance abuse, mental illness or trauma from physical and emotional abuse. Therefore, a volunteer must show compassion while consistently role modeling professional boundaries with the youth.
