DescriptionNAMI Northern Virginia is seeking an Intern to work as part of an exciting and dynamic team in the planning, development and production of the 2014 NAMIWalks Northern Virginia walk on September 20, 2014 at Tysons Corner Center. This unique internship opportunity will provide outstanding professional fundraising, event planning and community organizing experience. In this rewarding and important role, the Walk Intern will work closely with the Walk Manager to provide support and ensure a successful event.
NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Northern Virginia and it’s volunteers work together to raise awareness and provide education, advocacy, and support programs for people living with mental illness, families, students, educators, law enforcement, and the public through our neighborhoods. NAMI Northern Virginia addresses the mental illness needs of our community, replaces stigma with understanding, and helps thousands of individuals and families each year.
This is an unpaid internship position, offering a dynamic work environment for applicants interested in event planning, fundraising and outreach. The internship is available starting immediately. Internships are variable and each intern will work with the Walk Manager to build a schedule to meet the needs of the walk.

ResponsibilitiesBuild relationships with participants, donors and staff
Engage walkers with inquiries, fundraising and recruitment efforts
Assist with participant and sponsorship recruitment via email and phone, including neighborhood, university, corporate and other groups
Research and secure potential sponsors and in-kind donations (donated products and services)
Community outreach via social medial, press releases and community calendar postings
Coordination of pre/post walk event logistics
Ability to travel to and attend participant and community outreach meetings
Assist with other assignments as needed
RequirementsOutstanding writing skills
Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills to effectively communicate with various groups and audiences
Self-motivated with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Strong organizational skills
Resourceful, collaborative and energetic
Computer literacy is required
Ability to represent NAMI Northern Virginia in a professional manner
Candidates must possess an interest in nonprofit work with mental health organizations and a willingness to bring a commitment to hard work in a professional and fun workplace, while always being eager to learn.
