Community Housing of Wyandotte County is a nonprofit community development organization located in Kansas City, KS. The urban core of Kansas City, KS, is an area made up of several close knit neighborhoods and many people committed to making this well-kept secret a great place to live. We are in a phase of rapid growth, and building a team of people committed to the urban core will be key to our future success. Our mission is to revitalize, reinvest, and stabilize the Kansas City, KS area. Additionally, we hope to help develop the next generation of leaders in our industry.

CHWC utilizes three strategies for achieving our mission; we build new homes, we help families purchase their first homes, and we develop community assets that make our core neighborhoods attractive, safe places to live.

Because we are very centrally located, this internship opportunity would be an excellent choice for any student in or near the Kansas City metropolitan area. Though there are no set dates, we expect most internships to coordinate with school semesters, though longer internships will be considered. Basic hours are flexible, and some work may be done from home, though attendance at a weekly staff meeting is preferred.

This internship will provide broad experience in nonprofit administration. Candidates will learn about fundraising, event planning, marketing, program administration, community development and general administration. This is a great opportunity for a candidate who is interested in a career in nonprofit administration, public service, fundraising, grant-writing, or program management.


The Nonprofit Administration Intern will receive hands-on training in the areas of fundraising, event planning, program administration and community development. Daily activities will include drafting communications, grant writing & reporting, donor management activities, time management, budget management and event planning. This candidate will work closely with the Chief Development Officer, but will also spend time with the community organizer, construction superintendent and with the housing counselor. More specific daily activities will be developed with the selected candidate, according to their skills and career interests. All CHWC interns will on occasion serve as a backup to the administrative assistant for front desk and phone coverage, perform general office assistance, and assist at evening and weekend events as needed.


The ideal candidate for this position will have completed one to two years of college and have an interest in a career in the nonprofit sector. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral are necessary. Candidate must be proficient with Microsoft Office products, able to touch-type at least 50 WPM and have basic database knowledge. Experience with Photoshop, mass email products, social media and event planning is helpful. Candidate must be a self-starter and comfortable working under deadlines . Classes in journalism, marketing, and nonprofit administration will be helpful as well.
