Description'It Takes a Village' describes the importance of community, for people of all ages. Think back to your childhood - how many people had an impact on your life, positive and negative? Were they in your home, your neighborhood, your local school, your extended family? Did you feel embraced or isolated? Did you know whom to ask when you needed help - when there was a problem to solve? What about now? Do you have a safety net? If yes, where does that come from - your home, family, neighborhood, friends, colleagues? Are you part of a community, or communities, with concerned people who can direct you to appropriate resources for life's inevitable minor and major tribulations?
Now consider getting older (or maybe your parents or grandparents aging). You're active and engaged and expect to stay that way. But as the years go by, you may become more physically limited and less able to get out and about - at least without relying on someone else's aid. When you retire and/or your friends and family are out of your immediate geographic area, your referral sources for trusted professionals (e.g. plumbers, contractors, financial planners) might diminish, too. How will you know whom to trust in your home and with your more private issues? In the "olden days," many generations lived under the same roof providing support for each other in different ways at various stages of life. In these "modern times," that scenario is the exception rather than the rule.
Ashby Village is dedicated to improving the lives of older adults. Ashby Village is a community network of older adults living in the cities of Berkeley, Kensington, Albany, El Cerrito, Emeryville and parts of Oakland who want to remain independent, in their own homes and communities for as long as possible into old age. Volunteers provide a variety of short term services to help this happen. Although there are opportunities for other kinds of help, one of the greatest needs is for drivers for medical appointments or shopping. The amount of time spent volunteering could be small, but the gratitude and satisfaction is large.
Your help is needed with: Driving; Gardening; Handyperson; Computer Support; Medical Appointment Support; Home Companionship; Pet Care; Food Prep; Office Support; Organizing; Special Events.
