Description

We are a well known nonprofit agency that trains service dogs to assist disabled people achieve better independence. We are known for training in the Central Florida theme parks. We are looking for someone to live in and assist with all aspects of the organization, from playing with puppies to training advanced skills. Assistant would perform mundane tasks such as walking, bathing, exercising, and feeding dogs, responding to emails, running errands, etc. You would also train basic tasks, practice skills, develop and cement new skills, accompany senior trainers on outings to theme parks, socialize dogs-in-training, supervise volunteers, train volunteers, educate the public, answer questions, advocate for service dogs and disability rights in general, learn basic and advanced dog training theory and techniques, etc. You would share a small family home and get free room and board.

Responsibilities

This is a busy job but is also known to be a lot of fun. We get up around 6 am to let dogs out, then back in, then out, then in, ad infinitum, all day long. On a theme park day we start bathing dogs early and getting their gear ready, and get to the park around 9. We train and socialize all day and get home late, around midnight. If we are home we perform several short training sessions with each dog, including swimming lessons depending upon season. Theme park days involve lots of advocacy and public speaking, answering questions, and PR. There are plenty of opportunities for breaks, playing with puppies, sitting around with a dog in your lap, watching Netflix at home with a dog on your bed, etc. We sew specialty service dog gear so if desired you can learn how to sew as well.

Requirements

Intern must be physically healthy with no serious anxiety, PTSD, or other mental health issues that would interfere with a somewhat rigorous daily workload with the dogs and the public. We are well known and popular, and interactions with both the dogs and the public can be tiring. A strong work ethic is absolutely mandatory. We train for a fragile population and must keep their needs in mind above our own--some of our clients are racing the clock and could die before they get their service dog. We cannot afford to sleep in.
