Description

SCOPE OF WORK:
The Employment Development Intern will provide essential support to our clients through orientation to U.S. work culture and customs, intensive job development activities, direct job application and placement, networking with employers, and developing long-term resettlement and career goals.

COMMITMENT:
12 to 15 hours per week for twelve weeks, and a courtesy notice of two weeks before leaving the organization. Standard hours are Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday from 9 am to 3 pm, with an optional shift on Friday from 9 am to 12 pm.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:
• Ensure that core resettlement services are complete and non-employment concerns are addressed, so that clients may focus on their employment development
• Coordinate in-kind donations for clients
• Monitor client progress and participation by maintaining program records and client portfolios
• Lead volunteers in daily activities assisting clients with ESL tutoring or job development
• Provide public transportation, community, and U.S. cultural orientations through immersion activities in the field
• Support client progress toward integration and self-sufficiency by reinforcing IRC policies in early employment and regular participation
• Networking with local businesses/potential employers to create partnerships for direct job placements or sponsorships, and promote the IRC cause
• Prepare clients for interviews, and develop skills for communicating and networking with businesses and employers
• Assist clients with job searches, applications, and professional documents (resumes, cover letters)
• Develop resources for clients and volunteers to utilize in the employment development and ESL programs
• Other related duties as assigned

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS:
• Excellent employment record, competency and knowledge of U.S. employment culture and customs
• Understanding of the benefits of early employment for recently resettled refugees for financial self-sufficiency and community integration
• Ability to maintain compassion and professionalism in a highly diverse environment with clients of different cultures, social groups, and political opinions
• Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision from Volunteer Coordinator, as well as demonstrated leadership skills to guide volunteers
• Strong computer skills and networking abilities
• Investment in IRC history, mission statement, and work
• Commitment to IRC employment policies
• Proficiency in foreign languages such as Arabic, Assyrian, Farsi, Tigrinya, and Amharic are highly valued
• Valid driver’s license and vehicle registration and insurance
