Human Rights Internship in Ghana, West Africa

Students and recent graduates with a commitment to law and human rights are invited to apply for the “Law and Human Rights Internship” program in Ghana, West Africa to work with the Human Rights and Advocacy Centre.This is a great opportunity to gain international exposure while experiencing the complexities of implementing policy amidst the challenges of social and cultural norms in a developing country.

Three of the core projects at HRAC currently involve:
1. LGBT access to health and legal aid

2. The Pro Bono Human Rights Clinic which was set up by the Human Rights Advocacy Centre to give free legal support to the public, and

3. Monitoring and Evaluation of human rights cases in order to inform government policy, develop ensure implementation and compliance with international obligations.

HRAC Intern Duties include the following:
1. Interview clients regarding their claims/reports of human rights abuse
2. Prepare legal opinions and other legal documents
3. Review, organize and manage ongoing case files
4. Contribute to ongoing research projects including online research, conducting surveys and book research.
5. Assist pro bono attorneys with conducting legal research and fact finding
6. Attend court with an in house lawyer to assist clients
7. Participate in other human rights project activities which may include field research, monitoring press coverage of human rights issues, contributing to the development of training material, conducting educational outreach, attending meeting and conferences and reporting back to the organization.
8. Other tasks as assigned.

Interns may attend court hearings, lectures, training and special events and work under the supervision of experienced staff. This internship is unpaid. Students who wish to receive academic credit should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements and make arrangements prior to travel.

Location: The internship will primarily take place in Accra, Ghana, but students may travel to other regions as required.
Start dates are flexible. Interns must commit a minimum of 6 weeks.
