DescriptionThe American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
The American Red Cross offers exceptional undergraduate and graduate students internship opportunities at our Red Cross national headquarters in Washington, D.C. and in chapters across the country through our Internship Program. Interns are matched with a specific department where they work on advancing critical projects.
The Intern, Client Casework is an Unpaid Internship where candidates must be enrolled in a degree program at the time of the internship. The opportunity is based in Athens, GA.
• Undergraduate Junior/Senior OR Graduate Student with a major in Social Work, Non-Profit Management, Public Health
• Computer Skills: Internet use, logging in/off a sensitive information website, phone skills, Microsoft Excel, ability to type while speaking to client
• English required. Spanish as a second language is a plus.
• Interpersonal skills over the phone, ability to engage in meaningful discussion to identify answers to the questions in casework, ability to calm clients and guide through disaster recovery over the phone
Candidates will be considered for the summer 2016 semester – June 6th – August 12th
• 15 hours/week – 3 hours every day or 5 hours M,W,F.

The intern will assist the Disaster Program Specialist and the Client Casework Leads in Follow-Up Casework from the Athens Office by using a standard outline and process that is used for each case. The interns will review the cases in CAS 2.0 and make follow-up phone calls to ensure the client’s needs are being met. The intern will advocate on behalf of the client to community partner organizations for supplemental assistance. Apply policies, regulations, and procedures and know where to locate these. Submit appropriate, accurate, and timely reports as required. Ensure Fiscal controls are established and well-maintained. Communicate with other casework volunteers about availability and readiness to support casework in the field from the office. Assist with basic office chores and be comfortable with opening or closing the office.
