The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The American Red Cross offers exceptional undergraduate and graduate students internship opportunities at our Red Cross national headquarters in Washington, D.C. and in chapters across the country through our Internship Program. Interns are matched with a specific department where they work on advancing critical projects.

Every eight minutes, every day, the American Red Cross responds to a home fire or other emergency. If a fire starts in your home, you have just two minutes to escape. In NYC last year, 300 people were rescued from burning buildings, while more than 78 people, on average, die annually as a result of fires over the last decade. But, with your help, we can change that. Working in partnership with the FDNY, FDNY Foundation, and City Hall, we are launching Get Alarmed NYC, a volunteer driven campaign to reduce the number of fire deaths and injuries in New York City. Over the next 24 months, we've committed to install 100,000 smoke alarms in neighborhoods most affected by home fire. But we can’t do it without you!

The Intern, Home Fire Preparedness Campaign is an Unpaid Internship where candidates must be enrolled in a degree program at the time of the internship. The opportunity is based in New York, NY.

Candidates will be considered for the summer 2016 semester (Late May through August)
• 20 hours/week

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:
This position will support the GetAlarmedNYC home fire safety initiative to install 100,000 fire alarms in 2 years. Through a grassroots effort of community outreach, strategic planning, information management, Logistics and volunteer engagement; interns will have the opportunity to develop, evaluate, and lead organized events in service.

Requirements

Basic Qualifications:
• Undergraduate Freshman and above student enrolled in a degree program preferably in Emergency Management, Business Administration, Marketing, Communications, or related
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
• Adobe, Cloud, Illustrator, Google drive, forms, email, etc… experience is preferred, but not required
• Proven success in contributing to a team-oriented environment
• Proven ability to work creatively and analytically in a problem-solving environment
• Desire to use information systems to contribute to a fast-paced, mission-driven environment
• Excellent leadership, communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills
