Charity Science is a young non-profit with a small team that is working to make the world a better place. We support the most scientifically proven global poverty charities (although we have also worked on other proven areas in the past). We are a charitable grant-making organization that grants to effective global poverty organizations while educating the public about evidence-based charities.
About the Volunteer Opportunity
Charity Science's ongoing volunteer opportunity program is a great way to gain experience in a non-profit organization. The work involved will likely be quite diverse in nature and will vary considerably depending on individual strengths. Some areas where work will be available include but are not limited to research, operations, development, and communications.
Get hands-on experience alongside staff at nearly every level of the organization and gain social media marketing experience, take on outreach initiatives, and learn the ins and outs of operations. We are a young team with a unique startup-like culture. You can choose to work either in our office in Vancouver or remotely. This position is unpaid but has the potential for a paid position (depending on the right fit).
Our team is close-knit and we have lots of social nights, from watching documentaries and TED talks, to discussing philosophy, politics, and charity-related issues. We have a fridge with vegan food for everyone in the office to share. Our culture is pretty flexible and easy going. For those who prefer to telecommute, we communicate over Slack.
Requirements- Passion for charity and making the world a better place
- Scientific and skeptical mindset
- Communication skills
- Interest in learning and self-improving
- Familiar with GiveWell, Peter Singer, Innovations for Poverty Action, or effective altruism
- Proficient at data analysis and research methods
- Own a laptop
- Vegan or vegetarian
- Experience in a developing country
- Previous non-profit outreach, fundraising or communication experience (volunteering counts!)
We also ask that candidates start up their own Christmas fundraiser in order to be considered for the position. Don't celebrate Christmas? You can still do a general fundraiser! The idea behind these fundraisers is to raise donations for charity in lieu of receiving more stuff you don't really need. You can choose between one of the three most high impact charities in the world, as determined by GiveWell (so few have such a tremendous impact). 100% goes to the charity of your choice, not Charity Science. You can volunteer, make a notable impact for good and gain valuable experience all on the road to landing this volunteer opportunity. Fundraising applicants will be given priority in our selection process, though we take a comprehensive approach to all applicants.
