Description

Our Voices Matter is a Maryland nonprofit organization advancing social justice by working with underrepresented communities to develop broader civic engagement, grassroots activism, and leadership. We offer unpaid internships year-round to high school and college students (graduate and undergraduate). We also offer this opportunity to non-student volunteers who want to broaden their experience and expand their skill set.

This internship is for anyone interested who would like to learn new skills as they help our organization:
1. Conduct research and community forums on issues affecting underrepresented communities
2. Facilitate leadership training on community organizing and issue advocacy
3. Mentor community organizer interns, typically young people of color, ages 16-25
4. Coordinate nonpartisan voter registration and community service activities

Responsibilities

Strengthen your leadership and organizing skills as you work closely with our staff to:
1. Engage supporters through storytelling on our digital channels

2. Co-facilitate community forums and advocacy training sessions
3. Develop and maintain relationships with like-minded issue stakeholder groups
4. Coordinate nonpartisan voter registration and community service activities
5. Lobby legislators at the state and county level

6. Track policy developments and prepare issue briefs
7. Engage community members in targeted neighborhoods

Requirements

Successful intern candidates:
1. Commit to at least four hours per week per semester
2. Work from our office, which is next to Forest Glen Station in Silver Spring
3. Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills and an outgoing and organized demeanor
4. Are quick to understand or learn something and have an affinity for communications technology
5. Interest in, community organizing, civil rights, & social justice
