Political Internship at “The Black Institute”

The Black Institute is an “action” think-tank whose mission is to shape intellectual discourse and dialogue and impact public policy uniquely from the perspective of Blacks in America and people of color throughout the Diaspora. The Black Institute will translate the “think” in think-tank into “action” through three main strategic approaches: Knowledge, Leadership and Community. By partnering with academic institutions, The Black Institute will build Knowledge around Black issues by engaging in research, data gathering and polling. The Black Institute will foster a rigorous Leadership program which will include civic education, training and development. Finally, The Black Institute will partner with the Community to develop on the ground organizing and issue based campaigns.
The intern position at The Black Institute will be a multifaceted position which will include providing support to TBI’s work in the areas of office management, fundraising, administrative support, research and community organizing. The intern will gain experience by assuming responsibility for research under the guidance of experienced professionals in one or more of Managers.

Responsibilities


Interns are required to commit to 15-20 hours a week for at least 16 weeks or 4 months. Arrangements with fall, winter & spring Interns will be made based on academic schedules and availability. Internships are unpaid, however, The Black Institute will work with students in obtaining college credit.

Requirements

Specific qualifications include:
• Commitment to social equity and the work and mission of The Black Institute
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Critical thinker and positive attitude
• Good team player, self-starter and ability to work independently
• Ability to organize and communicate research findings
• Policy / advocacy experience (not required)
• Interest in social media and messaging
• Experienced as a community organizer (not required)
• Extensive computer skills
• Ability to work within the frame of a new and steadily growing organization
• Ability do to phone banking
• Ability to communicate with Elected officials
