DescriptionWe are seeking enthusiastic interns to assist with programs here at the St. Francis Center. This position is an excellent fit for any student studying social services, interested in non-profit work, or who wants to learn more about how to do good in their community. Interns will engage on the "front lines" of feeding and serving our community, as well as participate in a series of workshops with our staff to provide a comprehensive overview of the "inner workings" of the center. A large part of the internship involves helping with our summer camps for kids, including assisting families with registration, helping to run day camps, and chaperoning on field trips. The mission of St. Francis Center is to feed, serve, and walk with the poor as a community of hope in the spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Now accepting applications for summer! Ideally candidates would be able to start at the end of May to help with camp registration.
As a community of hope, St. Francis Center accepts people as they are; builds community among those who serve and those who are served; is valued as a vital, safe and highly sought-after community center; provides a comprehensive referral network of health and social service agencies; provides access to opportunities not typically available by economic and geographic limitations; develops sufficient spiritual and material resources to ensure the long-term viability of the Center.
St. Francis Center recognizes and believes in the dignity of all persons; that adequate resources exist for basic necessities; that as members of the human race, we are called to support each other in any way we can; that the Catholic faith, the teaching and example of Saint Francis of Assisi in particular, provides an especially powerful model for working with and among the poor.
Believing this, we are committed to working toward realizing each individual’s full human potential by facilitating the resolution of immediate needs and crises; establishing within the Center an environment where all individuals have a real sense of being welcome; a dynamic helping process based on shared responsibility and ministry between those served and those serving; being open to the needs of all people; serving in the spirit and manner of Saint Francis of Assisi.
SFCLA is open Monday-Friday 7 AM - 3PM and Saturday 7 AM -1 PM. We are closed on Sunday.
ResponsibilitiesThe Center’s small staff distributes over one million of pounds of food through our programs. Interns play a vital role in supporting every aspect of SFC's daily operations, from working directly with homeless and extremely low-income program guests, to helping organize donations of food and clothing, and providing program and administrative assistance. Having interns work the "front lines" of our programs solidifies their connection with guests and allows them to see firsthand how SFC meets the immediate needs of the families and individuals served.
Interns will help with serving meals to our guests experiencing homelessness, as well as distributing groceries to low-income families and individuals. Additionally, interns will take on a leadership role with our volunteers by greeting them and leading the volunteer orientation.
Summer interns will be heavily involved with our summer camp program. Responsibilities include assisting with registering families for our summer camp program, running day camps here at the Center, and chaperoning groups on field trips.
