Global Instruments to Protect the Rights of Older Persons at the United Nations

Gray Panthers, NYC Network www.graypanthersnyc.org seeks an intern for the fall

semester (September – December 2016) 8-10 Weeks, Maximum of 3 Months

JOB DESCRIPTION

 Contact Missions of Member States to the United Nations in order to set up

meetings

 Research and Attend Meetings at the United Nations

 Assist in advocacy and research projects regarding the concerns of older persons

at the United Nations

 Work will primarily be “virtual”

At the United Nations, there are several global policy initiatives to improve the quality of

life for older persons, including working toward a Global Human Rights Treaty and for

effective implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Organizations

representing the Ageing Community, including Gray Panthers, are working strategically

to lobby for positive outcomes. To support this effort, this unpaid internship focuses on:

1. Educating staff of Missions to the United Nations on the progress of these

initiatives

2. Develop a database of organizations throughout the world concerned about older

persons in order to amplify the voice of civil society on these important issue

3. Gathering information, through research, writing, attending meetings and

elsewhere to allow project leaders to develop and execute effective advocacy

strategies.

4. During December 2016, the United Nations will conduct the 6th session of the

Open Ended Working Group on Ageing. http://social.un.org/ageing-working-

5. The global blueprint for development – the Sustainable Development Goals has

been adopted. There is much remaining advocacy and preparation to be done

regarding the concerns of older persons in that framework.

SKILLS NEEDED

 Research – Understanding of academic research methods

 Strong writing ability

 Ability to work closely with project leaders, yet independently

 Good interpersonal skills

 Interns will need to work collaboratively and often independently.
