DescriptionCatholic Social Services, a non-profit agency since 1921, provides services to help build stronger futures for individuals and families of all faiths.
The Refugee Resettlement Program is the first point of contact for newly arrived refugees. With the primary goal to assist refugees attain self-sufficiency in their new community, the Resettlement Team provides support, guidance and orientation throughout the phases of resettlement. Services include securing housing, addressing medical concerns, developing life skills, assistance with job placement and linking refugees to mainstream services. The current case load primarily consists of refugees from Iraq and the East African countries of Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
ResponsibilitiesEssential Job Functions: Under the direction of the program Team Leader, the Case Management Assistant:
•Assists with the initial reception & placement services for new refugee arrivals by providing transportation and accompanying clients to community resources including but not limited to medical appointments, school enrollments, health screening and appointments to obtain a social security card
•Assists in office and/or via telephone for appointment scheduling, researching resources, assisting refugees apply for public benefits or linking refugees with community benefits programs
•Assists with follow up on matters related to public benefits, housing, medical needs and referrals to community resources
•Completes case related paperwork and program statistical information
•Other job functions could include: providing or assisting with orientation on the use of the public transportation system, coordinating meetings between refugees and landlords, providing a home management orientation, providing orientation for grocery shopping and food allowance budgeting
•Experience or strong desire in working with people from a variety of cultures and ethnic backgrounds.
•Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate educational program related to social services or international studies
•Ability to work independently and unsupervised in field settings as well as in partnership with a team
•A valid driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle with insurance and willingness to transport refugees
•Willingness to use public transportation with clients if needed to help clients navigate community resources independently
•Effective communication, writing and time management skills
•Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, email, and Internet.
•No religious affiliation necessary
** Prefer someone with Spanish-speaking skills and/or interest in education
•Minimum of 15 hours per week (2 full days) for a period of at least 12 weeks (3 months)
•Available work hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm
