DescriptionSMYAL supports and empowers lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth in the Washington, DC metropolitan region. Through youth leadership, SMYAL creates opportunities for LGBTQ youth to build self-confidence, develop critical life skills, and engage their peers and community through service and advocacy. Committed to social change, SMYAL builds, sustains, and advocates for programs, policies, and services that LGBTQ youth need as they grow into adulthood.
SMYAL engages LGBTQ youth through leadership development opporutnities and weekly after school programming. We are looking for an engeretic passionate young person who would like to gain skills working at a leading LGBTQ youth organization.
Must be available to work two evenings per week from 4:30-7:00 PM.
Must be available some weekends to help manage events.
Interns will get metro fare, free food, chance to participate in national and local conferences, and tons of incredible experience. SMYAL encourages diversity, LGBTQ and people of color are encouraged to apply!
ResponsibilitiesInterns would help facilitate at least 1 weekly after school program per week which aim to engage LGBTQ youth.
Weekly programs run from 5-7 PM, Tuesday through Friday.
Interns would be in charge of setting up for program (seating, food/snacks).
Interns would be responsible for co-creating engaging topic of discussion or activity for the 2 hours with youth.
Interns would be responsible for mainting a safe space for youth.
RequirementsHave a passion for LGBTQ youth development and empowerment.
Have a positive energetic attitude.
Be able to speak about difficult topics.
Be able to practice confidentiality.
