DescriptionLIFT is working to help lift people out of poverty for good.
We are a growing, national movement to combat poverty and expand opportunity for all people in the United States. Our mission is to alleviate poverty in LA and our country by engaging volunteer Advocates in this effort. LIFT recruits and trains a diverse corps of advocates comprised of undergraduate and graduate students, professionals, veterans, retirees, etc. Our advocates make a rigorous and sustained commitment to service.
This corps operates a national network of service centers, where they work side by side with a community member to find jobs, secure safe and stable housing, make ends meet through public benefits and tax credits, and connect them to critical supports like healthcare and childcare. More than 70,000 members and their families have been served in LIFT’s 15-year history. LIFT has offices in Boston, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles.
LIFT’s mission is to help community members achieve economic stability and well-being. We are working to establish a new standard for holistic and enduring solutions in our country’s fight against poverty.
Responsibilities- Advocates work a minimum of eight hours in the office each week. Tools are provided in the office to help you guide your work, from resource binders to veteran advocates with great ideas about projects you can initiate.
- Meet one-on-one with LIFT clients assessing needs and providing direct and referral services. You might help somebody write their first resume, locate a G.E.D. program, find affordable housing or child care, research job openings in the area, and/or provide listening and support.
- Communicate regularly with clients to create goals, check in on client progress, update clients on new resources/information, etc.
- Advocates are required to take part in volunteer trainings and listen to prominent community guest speakers. Trainings focus on issues/challenges facing our client base including: understanding the public housing system, public benefits, mental health issues, and employment needs. These Ongoing Trainings (aka “OT’s”) total to 3-4 hours a month and can be broken up into small sessions throughout the month or have one big session for the entire month.
RequirementsAdvocates are needed to work side-by-side with usually low-income individuals to address immediate needs (employment, housing, public benefits, health care, education, etc) and comprehensive, long-term support designed to help families break the cycle of poverty.
This is an unpaid summer internship for those interested in gaining experience in the following related fields: Social Justice, Social Work, Social Sciences, Case Management, Public Service, Urban Planning, Non-Profit Management, etc.
LIFT advocates and interns are bright and motivated with a strong desire to get to know and give back to their communities. We’re looking for people who are determined and committed to helping others by lending their pro-active problem-solving skills. Advocates must be supportive listeners with a willingness to get to know people in their community and the services available to help them.
When: May 2015 to August 2015. Four-month commitment is required. Start and end dates are flexible.
*Interviews will be required for this position.
