The Industry

Are you considering photography internships or entry level photography jobs? Generally, photographers take photos of places, events, and people. Working for a company or as a freelancer, your main duty is to take photos in still frames using cameras and other photo equipment. Photographers also develop most of their own film in a darkroom. As a freelance photographer, you’ll find work by advertising or networking. You may spend a good amount of time traveling for news stories, weddings, and other events.

The Career Options

Photographers can work in many different fields and often choose an area of specialization. For example, photojournalists take photos of current events for websites, TV stations, newspapers, and magazines. Portrait photographers take pictures of people and events, and you may work out of a studio or travel. Wedding photographers often present their photos in an album and may also provide framing services. Many photographers are self-employed, which involves additional responsibilities associated with running a business. As a photographer, you may choose to conduct workshops or teach photography classes as well to supplement your income.

The Internship

Photography summer internships are pretty common, but don't expect to be in charge at the end of your internship! Usually, you’ll have to work from the bottom up, but interns are much more likely to get a job offer from the employer they’re interning with. If you decide to intern at a smaller company, you’ll sacrifice the name prestige for other benefits, such as having an opportunity to see your projects go from start to finish. In addition to demonstrating an attention to detail, photographers also use many photo editing programs. Some of the most common editing applications include Adobe’s Photoshop and Lightroom, Corel PaintShop Pro, and free options like Google Photos and GIMP.

The Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of photography jobs is expected to grow about 3% over the next decade, which is slower than average.
