DescriptionThe Markaz, Arts Center for the Greater Middle East (formerly the Levantine Cultural Center) volunteers and staff members receive hands-on training in the non-profit sector focusing on the Middle East and North African region. Our staff members are given considerable responsibility in shaping our development and event programming. We are looking for intelligent, hardworking, and passionate individuals who wish to put their skills to use in the community while receiving meaningful career experience.
The Assistant to the Director works directly with the director on all the facets of running a busy nonprofit organization. This is a multidisciplinary position. The Markaz functions as Los Angeles' only Middle Eastern and North African cultural center. We champion a greater understanding of the Middle East through arts and academia. We host lectures, book readings, musical performances, art shows, workshops, and language classes.
ResponsibilitiesThe responsibilities of the assistant to the director includes; managing the appearance of the center, overseeing the cleaning of the center, answering phone calls, managing and updating volunteer/staff schedule, updating RSVP sheets and our membership, promoting events via social media, and managing the director’s schedule.
RequirementsMust be located in the Greater Los Angeles area or be in Los Angeles on your own accord for the duration of the internship. Must have transportation.
An interest in the Greater Middle East and North Africa as well a social and political issues is crucial.
10-25 hours a week commitment minimum.
