Compassion & Choices is the oldest nonprofit organization in the nation working to improve patients' rights and expand choices at the end-of-life. Our primary function is advocacy for and ensuring access to end-of-life options.

With approximately 60,000 supporters and 60 chapters, it is the largest organization of its kind in the United States. We have active campaigns in nine states, including Massachusetts. We are headquartered in Denver, CO with permanent offices in Portland, OR; Washington D.C., New York, NY; Los Angles, CA. We also have field offices in our campaign states. This internship will be with our MA Field Staff based in greater Boston.

We are currently focused on passing the MA Compassionate Care for the Terminally Ill Act in the 2015/16 legislative session. This would allow for mentally competent terminally ill adults, diagnosed by two physicians, with less than six months to live, to receive a prescription to end their lives in a peaceful and dignified way.

Our interns would be focused almost exclusively on gaining support for the bill in a grassroots organizing style.

This internship would be between 10-15/hrs per week. With an option for expanded hours, if desired.

Although the bulk of the internship involves canvassing for support for the Death with Dignity bill, interns are required to complete an assignment each week designated by the MA Campaign Manager and Field Organizer. These tasks will not only contribute to the momentum in MA for the Death with Dignity movement, but will also improve the intern's marketability and further develop their skill sets in political organizing. Weekly assignments include social media training, data base management, volunteer recruitment, grass-roots organizing, community outreach/education and opposition monitoring. Tasks will also including attending and tabling for C&C MA at Health and Wellness Fairs, Senior Centers, Councils on Aging, Health Associations, Political Organizations/Conferences, Student Unions, etc…

Must be a current full-time/part-time university student with a passion for public service and the political process. Preferred majors include (but are not limited to): political science, social work, public health/policy, business administration, marketing, communication, public relations, pre-med, and pharmacy.
