In These Times, an independent, nonprofit newsmagazine and website based in Chicago, is seeking art + design interns for our Spring 2013 internship session. Interns at In These Times participate fully in the publishing process and gain insight into every step of the production of an award-winning monthly magazine and website.

In These Times is a nonprofit and independent newsmagazine committed to political and economic democracy and opposed to the dominance of transnational corporations and the tyranny of marketplace values over human values. In These Times is dedicated to reporting the news with the highest journalistic standards; to informing and analyzing movements for social, environmental and economic justice; and to providing an accessible forum for debate about the policies that shape our future.

Over the last 36 years, In These Times has distinguished itself by producing high-quality journalism that treats women, communities of color, working people and other groups ignored by the mainstream media as legitimate audiences, sources and subjects for the news. Over the years, In These Times has published the work of a wide range of noted writers, including fiction by Alice Walker and Kurt Vonnegut; reporting by Clinton speechwriter David Kusnet, blogger Andrew Sullivan, and Salon Editor-at-Large Joan Walsh; and political commentary by former presidential candidate George McGovern, environmentalist Sandra Steingraber, the late Democratic Sen. Paul Wellstone of Minnesota, novelists Barbara Kingsolver and Dorothy Allison.

Art + Design interns help produce both In These Times and our website, and we seek to tailor responsibilities according to the individual's interests and skills.

Depending on your skills and interests, you will:

-assist with layout and design of the magazine
- work on advertising, publishing and fundraising and events design tasks.
-research and edit photos for both the magazine and Working In These Times, our labor/workers' rights blog.
-help translate content (both text and photos) from the print magazine to and tablet versions.
-attend and contribute ideas to periodic cover planning meetings.

Since In These Times is a nonprofit magazine, all interns very occasionally will be required to help with publishing and fundraising tasks.

Applicants must have experience with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator (Adobe CS5). Web and Basic HTML knowledge strongly preferred, but not required. Knowledge of Mac OSX strongly preferred. In These Times operates in a Mac environment.

Applicants should have a strong interest in politics and independent media.
Applicants should e-mail a short cover letter, résumé and photo/design samples (or links to them) to Art Director Rachel K. Dooley:, with the subject line ART INTERNSHIP APPLICATION.
The internship is unpaid, and interns are expected to work in our Chicago offices at least two days a week. We have immediate openings for Winter interns and are also considering applications for Spring. The Spring internship session runs from early January to mid-May, commensurate with Spring semesters. Exact start and end dates for the internship are flexible. Please indicate when applying your desired start and end dates.
