Description
Puentes is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide equal access to healthy, high-quality, safe and affordable food for people in all communities. Puentes implements this mission by providing hands-on training, on-the-ground demonstration, outreach and technical assistance through the development of Community Food Systems that help people grow, process, market and distribute food in a sustainable manner. The chosen interns will assist Puentes in all aspects of community food system development, urban agriculture, small farmer outreach, and youth development through innovative sustainable approaches. Interns work 3-5 days per week, averaging 20-40 hours of work per week. It is intensive job training experience and requires at least an 6 month commitment.All interns must have a positive attitude, an ability to receive constructive criticism, and a strong work ethic. Interns will receive supervision, intensive hands-on training, and skill sets acquisition with the opportunity to conduct and implement independent projects.
Responsibilities
Maintaining urban agriculture sites including:Moving compost and other organic materials;
Building living biological worm systems;
Watering plants and maintaining systems on a daily basis;
Picking up waste streams from area partners, e.g. coffee grounds, boxes, and other food waste;
Harvesting and processing produce;
Marketing, packing and distribution of the Farm-to-City Market Basket Program.
Retail sales at seasonal farmers markets.
Teach and work with other youth on site and at area farms and urban agriculture locations.
Record keeping and evaluation.
Requirements
