Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library is the former estate of H.F. duPont, with 60 acres of naturalistic garden set in the nearly 1000 acres of rolling hills of Delaware's Brandywine Valley. Appealing to a wide audience of tourists, culture seekers, and avid horticulturists, the Winterthur Garden is a historic and rare example of a "wild garden." The arborist intern assists the arborist in maintaining the health and vigor of the trees throughout the Winterthur Garden while learning arboricultural techniques. The intern participates in all aspects of tree care management, including ground and/or aerial pruning of trees.
Responsibilities
Working along side our staff Arborist among a 1000 acres of woods, meadows & streams with large trees. The intern will also participate in classes on plant identification, IPM, irrigation, turf management and plant records; attend lectures and field trips and complete short-term projects
Requirements
Six months educational and/or field experience in the study of forestry, horticulture or a related field; ability to express ideas clearly, orally and in writing; ability to lift 50 lbs; sufficient hearing and sightto be aware of nearby guests and staff when using or close to power equipment. Must have a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record. Salary $9.50 per hour, 35 hours per week M-F. On site housing is available. Start date-May 1-August 31 (flexible start and end dates) Applications due by March 1, 2013.
