Role Summary

Manages, plans and administers the operational and administrative activities of the Systems Architecture section. Plans and schedules the development, introduction, communication and maintenance of the corporate systems architecture including the applications, data, and infrastructure architectures and assures that this architecture is integrated with the business area architectures. May organize and control the activities of the section, may assign personnel to the various projects and may direct their activities.

Responsibilities

An Architecture Manager is a senior level contributor, with some matrix management responsibilities but no direct reports. All of the contributing architects on our team must be adept at communication, collaboration, line of business industry knowledge, and architecture practice. The successful candidate will have several years of varied IT experience, and an MBA would not be wasted.

THIS IS NOT A TASK BASED ROLE - he or she is a thought leader who can take on very large assignments with large amounts of ambiguity and know how to drive to conclusion in a collaborative organization. This person will roll up their sleeves and produce analysis and documentation on deadlines, deliver presentations up and down the organization, contribute to strategic roadmap development, participate in project delivery, and mentor junior staff. The successful architect will influence technology direction in alignment with strategic vision while rationalizing approach options with environmental constraints (e.g. time, cost, skills, and technology).

The Architecture Manager may play one or more of the following specialized roles:

A business architect is responsible for working with the strategic leaders to capture their vision in a format that is digestible and actionable by the solution architects. This person is a very senior level analyst who works with leaders to define and/or change business structures (missions, objectives, processes, organizations, capabilities, etc.) It is the people and process portion of the equation. There are multiple methods and tools that we use to do this - process views are only one tool. The nature of the problem space will lead us to choose which tools are appropriate for the task at hand.

A solution architect is responsible for interpreting the business architecture then crafting technology solutions that will realize the automation necessary to support the strategy through architecture best practices. There are multiple factors that will lead the architect to choose the appropriate tools to do this ¿ views such as a logical architecture are just one example. Another technique might be an options analysis, where multiple solutions are identified then rationalized against each other to put forward the best solution given many point-in-time complex factors. This analysis evolves the current state systems to a target state vision. (Note: the focus is on architecturally significant building blocks - not bug fixes or small enhancements.)

A data architect is responsible for interpreting the business and application architectures then crafting data strategy that will enable the business vision. Data architecture is a cross between business process (data management) and technology (applications and databases). This is a specialized skill - not a data modeler, it is a larger grain of analysis and impacts multiple organizations beyond IT.

Qualifications

Requires excellent planning, conceptual, consulting and communication skills, analytical ability, strong judgment and management skills, and the ability to interact with senior business area and IT management and staff solutions. A degree in Computer Science or a related discipline is preferred and several years of fast-paced, diverse IT experience.

- Familiarity with architecture frameworks such as TOGAF, Zachman, FEAF, etc.

- Experience working as an architect using approaches such as modeling, ATAM, etc.

- Project Management

- Software Development

- Database Management / Development

- Business Analysis
