At VillageTech Solutions, our volunteers create technology to better lives in developing countries. Previous projects include WireBridges, light/power systems, arsenic water filters, and now technology that will enable higher-quality education.
We are designing Looma, a small, powerful, low-wattage, low-cost, self-contained, web-connectable, interactive, audio-visual projection system that is able to bring educational programs to whole classrooms in remote, off-grid villages in developing countries.
Looma projects a 4’x6’ 300 lumen image on a wall. It offers a ‘white board’, a web browser, a rich set of multimedia supplements, and can be pre-loaded with government textbooks for the country of use. Looma allows teachers who are unaccustomed to computers to navigate through screens quickly and intuitively using a wireless wand.

ResponsibilitiesVTS’ volunteers are a virtual team of engineers who will execute a two phase project. Phase 1 will address bugs, deficiencies and feature requests in the current Looma software base over the next few months. This will improve Looma in field tests and educate the team in Looma's architecture and implementation. Phase 2 will re-architect the Looma system to be production-ready by the end of 2013.
The current version of Looma runs on Ubuntu on an ARM processor. The Looma code is a thin layer of Python for interfacing with Linux and managing the custom hardware (wireless wand) and a teacher/user interface written in HTML/PHP. *
The next generation Looma architecture will refine and extend Looma's functionality. We will re-consider the foundation assumptions (processor architecture, Linux version, code structure) and add capabilities like extensibility, app support, over-the-air content and software updating, and central management of content (cloud-based, curated repository of content.) The team will re-engineer the software and hardware to support required functionality. We use modern online tools for project management and collaboration (Asana, Git, and Dropbox).
