Tenants and Workers United, a non-profit community organization, has been active in the Arlandria / Chirilagua neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia for over 24 years. Our mission is to win social and economic justice for low-income people of color in Northern Virginia through community organizing, leadership development, and civic engagement. Examples of our current work include organizing for educational justice in Alexandria Schools; advocating to improve access to healthcare for the low-income, uninsured; and supporting immigrants in their fight for comprehensive immigration reform.
In addition to the above work, TWU’s Community Social Service Program provides a variety of services to the local low-income, immigrant community. We are seeking interns to support this aspect of our work.
Responsibilities
Principal duties of TWU's Community Social Services Intern include:
Referrals
• Provide referrals for services not offered at TWU, such as food assistance, emergency rent assistance, mental health services, etc.
Medical Debt Relief
• Help low-income community members obtain medical debt relief for hospital bills, doctor’s bills, laboratory expenses
Applications/Translating/Interpreting/Preparing Letters
• Help community members complete a variety of applications (employment, benefits, medical, unemployment, etc.)
• Provide teleconference interpreting for clients
• Prepare written letters as needed
• Read and translate mail
Workers’ Rights
• Educate and counsel community members on workers’ rights
• Advocate on behalf of community members with employers to help them win back unpaid wages and benefits due
• Refer to Human Rights Commission and provide follow-up
Requirements
Ability to relate to low-income, immigrant community
Good listening and communication skills
General knowledge of available social services
Ability to problem solve and think independently
Bilingual Spanish/English
