DescriptionGeneral Statement: The Cosmetology Aide performs paraprofessional work at the action level involved in providing instructional and related support services to students in a community college cosmetology program. Under general supervision, the position is responsible for providing input into the development and implementation of cosmetology curriculum, tutoring, teaching and demonstrating laboratory and classroom procedures, and conferring with faculty regarding student progress. Public contact is extensive, primarily including students and staff, for the purpose of exchanging instructional and related information. A Cosmetology Aide may direct the work of student assistants and other staff as assigned. Duties and Responsibilities: 1.Plan, lecture, and/or demonstrate cosmetology subject matter in accordance with State Board qualifications to classes and individual students in collaboration with faculty;
2.Direct students in practical labs; tutor students on problem areas related to classroom and lab procedures;
3.Confer with faculty, students, and staff about student progress;
4.Provide technical and other information to patrons concerning services offered, costs, appointment schedules, and related matters;
5.Compose, compile data for, and prepare reports of lab and/or classroom activities and/or student progress; audit and record student tickets; research background of subject matter to maintain current information;
6.Design, develop and deliver materials for presentation; assist in the development of tests;
7.Proctor tests as assigned;
8.Enter, modify and retrieve online data;
9.Direct the work of clerical and other staff in daily operations of the labs and classroom activities Requirements: This position requires possession of a valid California Board of Barbering Cosmetology Instructor's License and a Private Post Secondary Certificate; an Associate degree in Cosmetology or a closely related field or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience equivalent to successful work experience in a cosmetology lab, classroom, beauty salon or other cosmetology service that has included tutoring and/or non-credentialed teaching. The position requires working knowledge of cosmetology techniques, procedures, equipment, supplies, materials and safety procedures; demonstrated skills in communicating effectively with people of diverse cultures, language groups and abilities; oral communication, including public speaking; demonstrated skill in written communication; use of a variety of computer software to compose and prepare correspondence, reports, memoranda and other printed materials. Desirable Skills and Abilities: 1.Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, equipment and materials used in beauty salons and similar services.
2.Knowledge of the safety procedures and policies related to storage, use and disposal of cosmetology products, materials and equipment.
3.Skill in teaching and/or tutoring individuals and groups in cosmetology procedures, policies, equipment, materials, safety, salon operations, and other related topics.
4.Skill in respectful and sensitive communication with people who are diverse in their cultures, language groups and abilities.
5.Skill in oral communication, including giving concise instructions and public speaking.
6.Skill in written communication.
7.Skill in researching and compiling data for current subject-matter information and development of instructional materials.
8.Ability to work effectively as part of a customer service team.
