USAID’s Office of Transition Initiatives (OTI) is seeking a Data Visualization Intern to work with OTI’s Geographic Information Unit (GIU). The USAID Office of Transition Initiatives supports U.S. foreign policy objectives by helping local partners advance peace and democracy in priority countries in crisis. Seizing critical windows of opportunity, OTI works on the ground to provide fast, flexible, short-term assistance targeted at key political transition and stabilization needs. OTI operates in countries such as Afghanistan, Haiti, Tunisia, Kenya, and others.
The Data Visualization Intern would be responsible for building interactive visualizations and assisting with analysis of OTI program information for the visualization of real-time data, and traditional development indicators. The position will also perform research on tools and techniques in support of visualization and analysis and will work closely with OTI's Senior Technology Advisor, Web Developer, four GIS Analysts and a Graphic Designer. The candidate will be part of a close-knit Geographic Information Unit that uses geospatial data to assist Program Managers in explaining the “what, why and where” of OTI’s work and inform program decision-making.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
(i) Work collaboratively with OTI staff to turn program and situational narratives into visually compelling, static and dynamic data presentations
(ii) Development of visual analytics tools to support OTI Program management and decision-making. These tools should import different datasets and will produce interactive visualizations allowing the visual understanding of different types of new data.
Data to be visualized might include:
o Social media streams (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
o Program outputs, clusters and activity locations
o Survey results
o Short narratives
o Population movements over time
Bachelor’s or Advanced Degree in relevant discipline with specialization in information visualization.
Required competencies and knowledge:
• Experience in data visualization and analysis, including interactive visualization and the creation of high-quality infographics.
• Knowledge of processing language for graphics design or other visual analytics tools and languages.
• Experience with scripting, coding, and web design required for data access.
Valuable competences and knowledge:
• Experience working with Big Data, social network data, and geospatial data/satellite imagery.
• Experience working in the fields of global development or crisis mapping.
