Description

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

Join the American Cancer Society as a Diverse Community Outreach Intern (position is non-paid).

Responsibilities

As an integral part of our team, the qualified candidate will work within the diverse communities of Lake and Sumter Counties to recruit volunteers to assist with patient services and programs, coordinate events and work on public relations; develop community relationships with doctors, hospitals, community centers and other patient services outsources which serve the diverse and undeserved community; work closely with Unit Director and Administrative Support to coordinate & schedule presentation times on patient services and programs within target organizations including physician offices, Healthcare professional organizations and associations, churches, business, schools, etc. Also work closely with the Community Representatives and Relay For Life Event Chairs team to identify, recruit and train volunteers to support the Mission and Advocacy chair positions for ten Relay events.

Requirements

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
The qualified candidate must be actively enrolled in undergraduate course work towards a degree in public relations, communications, marketing, public health or other related discipline; must be familiar with the Diverse and undeserved communities in Lake and Sumter counties, and demonstrate strong organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal; proficiency with Windows based operating systems, Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel, Publisher, email, web browsers and basic computer skills required. Excellent time management and multitasking skills are also necessary. Self starter, with positive attitude, ability to work in a team environment and able to communicate difficulties to supervisor and overcome challenges presented. Volunteer coordination/management experiences a plus.
