Description

The Education & Outreach Department at WSKG Public Broadcasting has a spring internship opportunity available for a student currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited two- or four-year college in the field of K-12 Education, Health & Wellness, Outreach, or a related discipline. The Education & Outreach Department brings PBS KIDS and local learning initiatives to our communities through workshops, outreach events, the Internet, TV and Radio. Our Education Department specializes in Early Childhood Literacy, STEM, and Wellness areas as well as the Arts. Location: Vestal, NY Time Period: February 2013 to May 2013 (flexible) Hours: 90 hours total Description: This internship opportunity will allow the intern to participate in regional educational events as well as work within localized PBS KIDS initiatives. In addition, the student will be exposed to and participate in the behind-the-scenes activities of this region’s public broadcasting station. The Education HEALTH & WELLNESS internship is a learning experience and the intern will not be paid for services, but the intern will receive a $500 stipend at the end of the internship period. Responsibilities

The intern will work closely with the Community Outreach Coordinator, as well as with the Director of Education & Outreach Initiatives, and be given specific responsibilities within the scope of his or her coursework. Possible responsibilities may include: (1) Uploading Kids in Motion and MOVE IT! video content; (2) Helping to plan teacher training, and developing packets, promotions and communications with school districts in support of the Stride with Pride program; (3) Assessing short segments of the MOVE IT! program to develop companion materials that serve as activity extensions within PreK-2 and K-5 classroom settings, and in alignment with both Early Childhood and K-5 Learning Standards; and (4) Assisting at outreach events and with general departmental projects. Quantity and schedule of hours will be flexible and in accordance with the school’s program requirements, and may include some nights and weekends.

Requirements

The internship should be a requirement or option of the degree program in which the student is enrolled. Eligible students must maintain a strong academic standing to be eligible to participate, have reliable transportation, be highly self-motivated, and computer literate. Any student accepted for an internship must submit a statement from his or her school attesting that the student is enrolled at the school and that the course of instruction leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate.
