Description
The Education Camp Intern is responsible for presenting educational information to visitors and program participants as based upon the specific requirements set forth by Zoo New England (ZNE) and by the participating college or university, if applicable. In general, duties will include assisting full-time education staff in developing the day camp curriculum, assists full-time education staff in conducting the day camp, conduct informal public presentations, and administrative duties as needed. Opportunities for program animal handling, interpretive materials design may also be available. The Education Camp Intern will encourage the public to think and to learn about animals, habitats and conservation by helping them interpret Zoo New England’s collection. The Education Camp Intern is expected to complete a project by the end of the internship.
Responsibilities
• Staffs the Animal Discovery Center (ADC). Interprets and maintains exhibit components. Handles bio-facts responsibly and facilitates guest interactions with biofacts, exhibits and activities.
• Develops and conducts day camp programming.
• Conducts daily animal encounters. Handles encounters in accordance with ZNE’s professional standards and facilitates guest interactions with animals.
• Camp curriculum design and program development. Develop program assessment methods.
• Answers general guest questions while promoting Zoo New England, its programs and its mission.
• Maintains a safe, fun and educational environment through the enforcement of Zoo rules, observation of the public (especially children) and removal of potential hazards (i.e. spills, sharp objects).
• Interacts positively and professionally with ZNE’s educational partners.
Requirements
Preferred candidates should at least be enrolled in undergraduate program studies in zoology, education, biology, or a related field and/or experience in an education or zoo field. Must be available from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., actual hours flexible
Term: Would prefer at least twenty (20) hours, four (4) hours per day for three (3) consecutive months, must include a weekend day. Willing to work with individuals schedules.
