Engineering Intern

GENERAL SUMMARY
An engineering intern supports activities relating to safety, environmental compliance, productivity, profitability, employee retention, and customer satisfaction within the business unit, while developing a functional understanding of the process as a collaborative member of the technology group.
PRINICIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Engineering Interns will be expected to work with plant personnel and Technology to learn the cokemaking and by-products processes. They will provide technical support to operating and maintenance personnel as well as the management team. Such support may include development of mass and energy balance of plant processes, updating engineering drawings and related information, review, update, and/or development of standard operating procedures, development of training materials for plant personnel, updating/development of reporting related to plant performance. This position will require daily interaction with plant operating and maintenance personnel.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited university having completed at least three years of coursework.
* Strong interpersonal skills to allow effective interaction with plant personnel, contractors, on-site management, and upper management
* Strong analytical skills to evaluate process conditions, recognize deviations from normal operational conditions, and identify proper corrective actions
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Self-motivated and self-directed to work, at times, with little supervision
* Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite and Lotus Notes is required. Proficiency with AutoCAD, OSISoft ProcessBook, and/or DeltaV software is desirable.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
In order to properly perform the integral functions of this job, the employee is occasionally required to: stand, use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands or arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and smell. Frequently, the employee will be required to: sit, walk, talk, and hear.
The employee in this classification will be required to occasionally lift objects of up to 25 pounds in weight.
Vision requirements for this position include: close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The employee will occasionally be exposed to conditions of: working near large mobile equipment, extreme heat, outdoor weather conditions (high winds, precipitation, heat, cold, etc.), vibrations, and heights. Hard hat, tight-fitting safety glasses/goggles, flame-retardant pants and coat, cotton (i.e. non-synthetic) long underwear, and steel-tipped boots with metatarsal guards are required when in the plant. Some regulated areas of the plant require the use of a half-face or full-face respirator. Hearing protection is required in parts of the plant. The potential exists for exposure to toxic, caustic, and/or carcinogenic chemicals.
