Description

As a Premier Accredited Center of the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH), Green Chimneys operates superior equine education and intervention programs. Equine facilitated learning, therapeutic riding, vocational barn work, equine sport, a small driving program, vaulting and equine massage are activities offered to the children. Lead staff holds PATH Master Instructor Certification, EAGALA Certification, Centered Riding Instructor status, and equine sport massage certification. A broad range of additional credentials in various equine activities, and qualification to implement high quality programs for children with special needs provides a curriculum of challenging, hands-on activities that engage individual children and encourage them to explore their potential through caring for and interacting with the horse. Interns in this area assist in riding classes, work one-on-one withstudents, and are responsible for taking care of the daily needs of our equine herd. Internship Skill Areas ? Animal Care, Handling and Management- learn how to provide humane and species-appropriate care for farm animals, horses, wildlife and a variety of small and large species in the context of a nature-based therapeutic intervention program. Animal handling, selection, feeding, medical care and training are taught by experienced staff specialists. • Introduction to Program Administration- learn how to create, implement, and document activities around animals and nature. The internship experience provides an important introduction to program development for those who seek to replicate and administer nature-based programs in other settings. • Farm Class Teaching Support- learn to skillfully apply animal-assisted interventions and horticulture education to groups of students as teaching assistants in farm, riding and garden classes. • Intern Project- Institute Interns, either as a group or individuals, will participate in an additional project to enhance the Green Chimneys Farm, or another area of the organization and its programs.

Responsibilities

Interns are expected to work 5 days a week from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The schedule is Tuesday thru Saturday or Sunday thru Thursday and includes holidays, at the Institute’s discretion. Interns have the opportunity to work with the student population one-on-one and in groups. Responsibilities include farm chores and special projects with students; assisting staff with classes; assisting with public programs and special farm events; documentation of residents’ progress at farm, and regular communication with full-time staff about the students. Morning and afternoon chores, including feeding, watering and cleaning of stalls for animals, special projects with residents, such as grooming animals, painting signs, repair of farm areas, creating educational displays,assisting with farm science, horseback riding, documentation of residents’ progress toward treatment goals. assisting staff with public programs and tours; off-grounds programs and other special events, ability to keep animals and children safe in all ways, all day

Requirements

The Institute Internship is for highly committed and flexible individuals who are able to dedicate a set period of time to Green Chimneys and acquiring skills in the principles of nature-based education and therapy. There is no academic pre-requisite but the Institute Internship can be used as a supplementary practicum in training for a career in social work, psychology, education, veterinary science, animal care and program administration. Individuals who hold academic degrees or are licensed in professions such as Psychology, Teaching or Social Work may apply for an internship but will not be able to practice under their license. The Institute Internship is a learning experience and all interns, regardless of previous degree or certification earned, function as support staff under the supervision of the Green Chimneys staff.
