Title: Generator Design Engineer - Entry Level Location: VA-Richmond ALSTOM Power Inc., a global leader and provider of power generation engineering products and services, is seeking a Junior Generator Design Engineer. This position is located in Richmond, Virginia. The Generator Design Engineer shall provide engineering support for repairs, refurbishment and/or maintenance on Alstom fleet units, as well as competitors' units (i.e. GE, WE, Siemens, etc.). He / She shall take technical direction from Design Engineers, Senior Generator Design Engineers (Team Leaders) and/or the Manager of Generator Engineering to ensure timely creation of engineering deliverables to support critical path production schedules. The Junior Generator Design Engineer shall support his fellow Engineers to follow engineering projects from the quotation phase, through the design, production, inspection, and final shipment phases of the projects. He / She shall provide technical support for the repair / refurbishment design, and for supplying all technical design documentation to support production in house or at vendors, suppliers, or on site as required. The Junior Generator Design Engineer shall also support manufacturing engineers, welding engineers, project engineers, and project managers as required on each project. He / She shall support the Generator Engineering group relay technical information through the project manager and Customer Service Manager to the customer. The Junior Generator Design Engineer will support Design Engineers, Senior Generator Design Engineers (Team Leaders) and/or the Manager of Generator Engineering and provide: * the technical definition of repair solutions that meet customer specifications, Alstom specifications and industry requirements. * dimensional and process accuracy of all design documentation to support production, while ensure the engineering / project schedule and costs are at or under budget. * the design, development, and production support of generator rotating and stationary component repairs and refurbishment for Alstom and other OEM equipment. Typical repairs and refurbishment are consisting of field and stator rewinds, rotor dovetail/top tooth repairs, retaining ring replacements, mechanical modifications, component condition assessment, failure analysis, etc. The Junior Generator Design Engineer shall also provide comprehensive and timely handling of all generator/auxiliary related operational and technical inquiries in support of Fleet Customer Service Managers. Essential Responsibilities * Utilize experience and conceptual design abilities to produce detailed drawings and layouts. * Provide design and technical analysis of repair and refurbishment as well as non-conformance issues. * Perform and / or check dimensional layouts for repairs / refurbishment. * Develop design specifications. * Schedule, definition, and creation of project and component specific Inspection and test plans as required. * Schedule, definition, and creation of project and process specific procedures as required. * Schedule, definition, and designer support of timely creation of project and component specific CAD drawings as required. * Schedule, definition, and creation of project and component specific purchase requisitions as required. * Issue, route, and maintain drawing files and procedures. * Maintain project binders/electronic folders. * Prepare for and participate in design reviews. * Interface with other engineering groups within Alstom to coordinate technical requirements and product integrity. * Attend and provide input on project status meetings. * Assist project management in project administration and customer contact. * Prepare reports and technical presentations. * Answer technical questions from customers (internal and external). * Support workshop and on-site production - answer questions and follow progress from a technical standpoint. * Perform on site or in house hardware inspections for damage assessment, and reverse engineering of hardware as required to support quotation and manufacturing. * Provide engineering costs estimations for defined scopes of work. * Support proposal risks reviews by providing technical information and participate in assessment of possible project risks. * Provide technical requirements and support supply management in obtaining production hardware quotations. * Create and support on-site customer presentations of proposed repairs / refurbishment. * Attend and support in-house and on-site project kick off meetings. * Travel to site to lead and perform measurement work, field repairs, vendor evaluation, etc. * Recognize when the need for additional specialized expertise is essential and take action to procure help. * Analyze inspection and test data and take actions as appropriate. * Provide technical support to sales staff. * Develop and support new R&D processes, designs, and testing as required. * Prepare documents for quoting growth work on projects in progress. * Review customer RFQ''s and help prepare sales proposals. * Work with internal departments and customer to clarify scope of work and technical requirements. * Perform electrical layout for generator winding upgrades/replacements. * Evaluate electrical equipment down stream of the generator (iso-phase, generator breaker, a.s.o.) * Create and maintain work procedures to improve cycle time and cost for on site projects. * Lead efforts to create and maintain all necessary tooling lists for on site projects. * Respond to all fleet generator operational and technical inquiries in a timely manner. Must be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. * Troubleshoot all mechanical and electrical problems for generator, identifying and resolving as required. Resolve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. * Develops new design or prepares design modifications to resolve issues following established procedures. * Maintain critical computer databases as required following established procedures. Review field reports and other information for accuracy and completeness. Retrieve documentation necessary to perform all functions. * Prepare recommendations for generator outages. * Provide technical engineering support to customers and other Alstom Power Inc.'s personnel for overhauls, outages, and sales of spares and upgrades as requested. Education * Bachelor''s Degree in engineering or related field Knowledge, Skills and Experience * Up to 2 years of experience, or a special combination of education and experience and/or demonstrated. * Strong oral and written communication skills * Excellent knowledge of Microsoft products, e.g. Windows, Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook etc., and Lotus Notes * Excellent knowledge of 2D or 3D CAD software * Ability to travel up to 25%, both domestically and internationally. * Ability to pass pre employment drug screen, physical and background check. * Authorization to work in the US without any further action from ALSTOM.
