Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library is the former estate of H.F. du Pont with 60 acres of naturalistic garden set within a 1000 acres of woods, meadows & streams amid the rolling hills of Delaware's Brandywine Valley. Appealing to a wide audience of tourists, culture seekers, and avid horticulturists, the Winterthur Garden is a historic and rare example of a "wild garden". The Groundskeeping Intern will learn proper turfgrass management techniques through hands-on experience in the day to day management of the turf within the Winterthur Garden and Estate. They will gain experience in handling a range of mowers and turf situations. They will also assist with the maintenance of the historic naturalistic design of the garden by learning and practicing good safetyand excellent horticultural techniques e.g. fertilizing, planting, pruning, leaf removal, mowing, spraying pesticides, mulching, weedeating and learn the cultural requireents and botanical nomenclature of the plants along with the design principles used in the Winterthur Garden.

Responsibilities

Winterthur's Horticulture Internship program provides a diverse and exciting experience for students in the field of plant science, ecology and related disciplines. Working side by side with Horticultural staff and participating in classes on plant identification, IPM, irigation, turf management and plant records; attend lectures and field trips; and complete short-term projects.

Requirements

Six months educational and/or field experience in the study of horticulture or a related field; ability to express ideas clearly, orally andin writing; ability to execute oral and written instructions; ability to lift 50 lbs.; ability to safely operate horticultural hand tools and power equipment; must have valid driver's license and acceptable driving record. Salary: $9.50 per hour - 35 hour week M-F . Limited housing is available on site.
